The New Orleans BioInnovation Center (NOBIC), which will house biotech and life sciences entrepreneurs and startups, has opened.
NOBIC is designed to help research institutions and biotech and life sciences startups with commercialising ground-breaking research through its programming, access to capital, facilities, and networking opportunities with local, regional, and national firms.
The Center will also support the research and drug discovery at LSU Health Sciences Center, Tulane Health Sciences Center, Xavier University, and UNO.
As per the information available, NOBIC already houses seven start-ups and two private equity funds, and is analysing over 20 new scientific discoveries, inside the center.
The opening of the facility is going to result in new Biotech Jobs. There’s an emerging biotechnology economy in downtown New Orleans and this new center will hold 80 companies, employing just about 200 people.
President of the center, Aaron Miscenich said, the main benefit is going to be jobs.
“Basically we have brilliant research right now going on the universities here in New Orleans, but a lot of it’s sitting idle or it’s being commercialised elsewhere. What we’re doing is to start companies around these technologies and then grow them here in New Orleans so we can add more and more to the New Orleans economy,” said Miscenich.
It is being highlighted that the biotech industry is shaping up to be an important one for the New Orleans area, and with the dedication of the Center, more entrepreneurs in the field will have a cost-effective way to get a start-up going. Miscenich describes it as wetlab business incubator, which means “we’re trying to develop a life science industry here in New Orleans by helping to start companies around the university life science technology that are here in town.” He says the Center offers startups access to the area’s leading researchers, and business resources, without the expense of building out their own labs.
